Etymology[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 蔽膝 (ancient knee covering, SV: tế tất). The obsolete form bí tất is also attested.

The "intrusive" ‹-t› in the first syllable occurred in anticipation of the ‹t-› in tất.
