Sicilian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from of Latin sufflāre, from present active infinitive of sufflō (blow, puff up, inflate). The initial palatalization could derive from the dissimulation of the aforementioned verb, determining a reduplication of the original fl- nexus, instead of the s-. Alternatively the phonetic change could derive from an intermediate vulgar form *flufflare, frequentative of sufflare. Doublet of susciari.
