From Proto-Germanic *kreupaną, from Proto-Indo-European *ger- (turn, wind). Cognate with Old Frisian krūpa, kriāpa, kriēpa, krēpa, Old Saxon kriopan, Old High German kriofan, and Old Norse krjúpa.
