    • 1892, William Bright, The Canons of the First Four General Councils of Nicæa, Constantinople, Ephesus and Chalcedon, The Clarendon Press, second edition, page #222:
But the resolution proceeds—‘ And so that of the Pontic, the Asian, and the Thracian diœceses the metropolitans alone, together with those bishops of the said diœceses who live in barbaric territories, should be ordained by the aforesaid holy see of the holy Church of Constantinople ; it being understood that each metropolitan in those diœceses will, together with the comprovincial bishops, ordain comprovincial bishops, as is prescribed by the sacred canons ; but that the metropolitans of those diœceses, as has been said, should be ordained by the archbishop of Constantinople, after harmonious elections have been made according to custom, and reported to him.’
