Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch duchtich, from Old Dutch *duhtig, from Proto-West Germanic *duhtīg. Equivalent to modern deugen (to be virtuous) +‎ -ig. Originally an adjective, but chiefly used as an adverb in modern Dutch.

Cognate with German tüchtig (efficient, capable, hard, competent, big), English doughty, Danish dygtig (virtuous, proficient).
