[edit]From Gothic *𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌽𐌺𐌾𐌰 (*skankja), or from Old French eschanson, from Frankish *skankjo, both from Proto-Germanic *skankijô (“server or pourer of drinks”), from *skankijaną (“to pour in, serve drinks”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keng- (“to limp, be crooked, slant”).
