From Proto-Indo-European *n̥bʰrís (rain-cloud, rain, cloud). Cognates include Sanskrit अभ्र (abhrá), Old Armenian ամբ (amb), Latin imber and possibly Ancient Greek ἀφρός (aphrós) and ὄμβρος (ómbros).
