From Proto-Iranian *abráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *abʰrás, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥bʰrós (rain-cloud, rain, cloud). Cognates include Sanskrit अभ्र (abhrá), Old Armenian ամբ (amb), Latin imber and possibly Ancient Greek ἀφρός (aphrós) and ὄμβρος (ómbros).
