From Proto-Germanic *furaibudōną (to proclaim, lere, instruct), equivalent to fore- +‎ bodian. Related to Proto-Germanic *budą (message, command, precept), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ- (to be awake, perceive fully).
