Etymology[edit]

Equivalent to fange (to capture) +‎ -sel (act of). From Old Danish fengelse (prison), borrowed from Middle Low German vangnisse, vengnisse, cf. German Gefängnis. Icelandic fangelsi and Swedish fängelse are also borrowed from Low German.
