From Russian го́род (górod), from Proto-Slavic *gȏrdъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gardas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰórdʰos, *ǵʰortós, from base Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (to enclose, to grasp), either directly or possibly via Proto-Germanic *gardaz. Cognate with English yard, garden, gird, Danish gård, Faroese garður, German Garten, Romanian gard and Albanian gardh.
