From Gallo-Romance *wespa (compare French guêpe), a conflation of Latin vespa with a Germanic word (compare Old High German wafsa), both from Proto-Indo-European *wobʰseh₂ (“wasp”), from *webʰ- (“weave”) (referring to the insect's woven nests).
