Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gomolь, *gomola (lump, clod), from Proto-Balto-Slavic; compare Polish gomóła (lump), Upper Sorbian homoła (spadix), Czech homole (loaf), Russian гомо́ла (gomóla, lump, clod), Lithuanian gãmalas (chunk, lump). Perhaps compare also Albanian gamule (heap).
