Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gomolь, *gomola (“lump, clod”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic; compare Polish gomóła (“lump”), Upper Sorbian homoła (“spadix”), Czech homole (“loaf”), Russian гомо́ла (gomóla, “lump, clod”), Lithuanian gãmalas (“chunk, lump”). Perhaps compare also Albanian gamule (“heap”).
