From Old High German gruozzen, from Proto-Germanic *grōtijaną (to make cry; to scold; to address (an issue); to address (an individual), greet), causative of *grētaną (to weep, cry). Cognate with German grüßen, Dutch groeten, English greet, Icelandic græta.
