From Proto-Tai *kuŋᴮ/ꟲ (shrimp). Cognate with Thai กุ้ง (gûng), Lao ກຸ້ງ (kung), ᦂᦳᧂᧉ (k̇ung²), Tai Nüa ᥐᥨᥒᥲ (kòng), Shan ၵုင်ႈ (kūng), Ahom 𑜀𑜤𑜂𑜫 (kuṅ), Saek กุง.
