Etymology[edit]

Probably ultimately from Ottoman Turkish قیدیقلانمق (gıdıklanmak). Compare Aromanian gadil, Bulgarian gădeličkam, Albanian gudulis. Other theories also existed, including the Latin catulīre, or *cattellāre, a derivation from the aforementioned Bulgarian, or a Dacian substratum word of Indo-European origin, compare *geid- (tickle).[1]
