From Old Swedish giælda, giælla, gælla, from Old Norse gjalda, from Proto-Germanic *geldaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeldʰ- (to pay). Under influence from Low German gelden, compare gälda. See also Icelandic gilda and Icelandic gildandi.
