From Proto-Tai *ɣamᴮ (night). Cognate with Thai ค่ำ (kâm), Northern Thai ᨤᩴ᩵ᩣ, Lao ຄ່ຳ (kham), ᦆᧄᧈ (xam¹), Shan ၶမ်ႈ (khām), Ahom 𑜁𑜪 (khaṃ), Saek กฺั้ม.
