From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (goose). Cognate with Thai ห่าน (hàan), Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), Shan ႁၢၼ်ႇ (hàan), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han). Compare Middle Chinese (MC ngaenH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (goose), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (goose).
