From Middle Dutch hontdage, a calque of Latin diēs caniculārēs (puppy days), itself a calque of Ancient Greek κυνάδες ἡμέραι (kunádes hēmérai, dog days). Equivalent to hond +‎ -s- +‎ dagen.
