  • (file)

Verb[edit]

huize

  1. (dated or formal) singular present subjunctive of huizen

Noun[edit]

huize

  1. (archaic) dative singular of huis

Usage notes[edit]

This form is used in a number of fixed prepositional phrases, most often with a following name to indicate "the house of". This usage has archaic or very formal connotations, and is thus primarily associated with large manors and the nobility. However, it may also be used in a joking manner to refer to a normal house, in which case huize is often treated merely as an archaic variant of huis, without regard to its original grammatical function as a dative.
