Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *aidza + -ull, close to Ancient Greek αἴθαλος (aíthalos, thick smoke, ashes, soot). Phonetically possible also from Proto-Indo-European *eǵʰerom (lake), from the stem *eǵʰ- (border), cf. Proto-Balto-Slavic *eźera-, Lithuanian ẽžeras, Old Prussian assaran ([azaran], lake) and the like. Orel simply derives it from jezer, which he considers a borrowing from Slavic with a metaphorical shift in meaning.

Noun[edit]
