Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German *jiuwezen, *jiuchezen, variants with umlaut (as also in German ächzen) of Middle High German jūwezen, jūchezen, derived from the interjection , jūch (yahoo!, woohoo!). Cognate with German jauchzen, juchzen.
