From Dutch kampioen (“champion”), from Middle Dutch campioen, from Old Northern French campion, campiun (cf. French champion), from Proto-West Germanic *kampijō (cf. German Kämpe), derived from *kamp (“field, fight”), from Latin campus. Doublet of kampus, kamp, kampanye, and sampanye.
