From Malay keraton, from Classical Malay keraton, from Javanese kraton (ꦏꦿꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀ (“kingship; palace”), “royal palace, kingdom”), karaton (ꦏꦫꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀, “royal palace, court”), from Old Javanese karatun (“kingship, royal dignity”). Reconstructed as ratu + ke- -an. Doublet of kedatuan and kedaton.
