From Middle High German klammer, klamer, ultimately related to Proto-West Germanic *klammjan (to clamp; to squeeze). Cognate with German Klammer; compare also English clam, clamp. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
