Inherited from Middle French laniere, from Old French lasniere (compare Old French lasne (strap, thong), alteration of earlier nasliere, from nasle (strap, thong) from Old Dutch *nastila, from Proto-Germanic *nastilō (strap), from Proto-Indo-European *ned- (to knot). Akin to Old High German nestila (band, strap) (German Nestel (string, strap, lace)).
