French[edit]

Inherited from Middle French laniere, from Old French lasniere (compare Old French lasne (“strap, thong”), alteration of earlier nasliere, from nasle (“strap, thong”) from Old Dutch *nastila, from Proto-Germanic *nastilō (“strap”), from Proto-Indo-European *ned- (“to knot”). Akin to Old High German nestila (“band, strap”) (German Nestel (“string, strap, lace”)).
