Etymology[edit]

An original adjective formation after *lesh, *lesht +‎ *-rik (cf. besnik), reflecting Proto-Indo-European *lak̑is- (salmon, trout). Compare German Lachs (salmon), Russian лосо́сь (losósʹ, salmon), Lithuanian lašišà (salmon), and others. The sense development reflects the particular fish color.
