Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *maːɲʔ (to borrow), cognate with Muong mãnh, Arem maːɲʔ. Compare also mướn (to hire, to rent).

Compare also Proto-Katuic *maaɲ (whence Pacoh manh (to borrow)). The words for "to ask, to request" in other Austroasiatic languages (such as Semnam smaɲ, Khmu [Cuang] maːɲ, Mon သၟာန်) might be related as well.
