Etymology[edit]
Compound of mahkamah (“court”) + agung (“supreme”), previously pengadilan agung (1942-1945), a calque of Japanese 最高法院 (saikōhōin, “supreme court”), term used in East Asia, except for Japanese home islands, 最高裁判所 (saikōsaibansho).
