Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Ancient Greek μαιευτικός (maieutikós), from μαία (maía, midwife). In Platonic dialogue, the philosopher, through the Socratic method, assists in the "delivery" of knowledge already latent in a person, a role analogous to midwifery.
