Borrowed from Javanese ꦩꦼꦤ꧀ꦢꦼꦩ꧀ (mendem, intoxicated), from Old Javanese mĕndĕm, mĕṇḍĕm (drunk), probably from Tamil மதம் (matam, honey; madness, frenzy; inebriety, intoxication), from Sanskrit मद (mada).
