From Proto-Indo-European *h₃m(e)iǵʰyeh₂-, a derivative of *meiǵʰ-, *h₃meiǵʰ-. Compare Old Armenian մէզ (mēz), Latin meiō, Avestan [script?] (maēsati), Sanskrit मेहति (mehati), Lithuanian myžti, Ancient Greek ὀμείχω (omeíkhō).
