Navajo[edit]

Etymology[edit]

na- (atelic, circuital) + -y- (3rd person object prefix) + -∅- (3rd person subject prefix) + -∅- (classifier)-ʼeesh (continuative imperfective stem of root -ʼEEZH, “to lead — 2+ objects”).

Verb[edit]

neiʼeesh

  1. he/she is leading them around
  2. he/she keeps them, has them (persons or animals under the subject's control)

Usage notes[edit]

The stem used for leading two or more objects is different from the stem used for leading only one object. For leading only one object, see neilóóz.
