Etymology

Uncertain. Related to Tocharian A olyik (“id”), assuming its translation is correct, which would mean both are from Proto-Tocharian. In any case, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂euluh₁en-, a form of *h₂ewlo- (“tube, channel, hole”), in which case cognate to Ancient Greek αὐλός (aulós, “tube, pipe; haulm”), αὐλών (aulṓn, “hollow, channel, strait”), Old Armenian ուղի (ułi, “road”), Hittite [script needed] (halluwa-, “hollow, pit”), Latin alvus (“cavity, stomach, hold of a ship”), etc.
