Dutch[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
From oog (“eye”) + taal (“language”).
Noun[edit]
oogtaal f (uncountable)
- Nonverbal communication using the eyes.
- Synonym: ogentaal
Etymology 2[edit]
From oog (“eye”) + taal (“hair”); this meaning of taal is long-obsolete in modern Dutch and derives from Proto-West Germanic *tagl (“hair, tail”). It is thus cognate with English tail, and etymologically distinct from the common word taal meaning "language".
