Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. Possibly ultimately from forms of Proto-Indo-European *h₁opi- + *pulu- (“hair”), which would be cognate to Latin pilus (“hair”) and Sanskrit पुलक (pulaka, “bristling of hair”).
