From Proto-Malayic *pali (taboo) through the addition of the fossilized infix -um-, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *palihi, from Proto-Austronesian *paliSi (taboo, ritual restriction; purifying rite). Cognate with Indonesian and Malay pemali and Bima pamali
