Etymology

[edit]

A dubious theory has it descend from Ancient Greek terms πῦρ (pûr) and κοῖλος (koîlos) with an approximate meaning of "fiery hole". Nevertheless, the true etymology lies in Latin portulāca (purslane), a plant that was commonly used to mitigate vaginal pain after childbirth.
