From Proto-Khasian *pʔut, from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Khasi pyut, Proto-Katuic *pʔuus (rancid) (whence Kuy pɁoːh), Khmer ផ្អស់ (phʼɑh, tasteless, stale; dried out).
