Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Latin palātum (palate), probably confused with or influenced by palātium (palace) phonetically (or perhaps through a Vulgar Latin *palātium). Compare French palais (palate), in which the same evolution took place.

Doublet of palat, a borrowing.
