  • This form likely represents a pronunciation [r̥] (from Proto-Germanic */xr/); it is one of the last traces of the Proto-Germanic distinction between /r/ and /xr/ English. Other terms with */xr/, such as reddenn (“to save”) (from *hradjaną), have already gone over to /r/ through lexical diffusion.
