Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *t͡ʃɨ-wat͡ʃu, from Proto-Tupian *ɨt͡ʃɨ.[1][2] By surface analysis, sy (mother) +‎ -ûasu (big).

Cognate with Mbyá Guaraní guaxu and Guaraní guasu.
