Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish صینامق (sınamak, to try, test), derived from Proto-Turkic *sï̄n (observation, test).[1] Compare Kazakh сын (syn, test), Kyrgyz сын (sın, test, expertise).

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (sına-, to test), Azerbaijani sınamaq (to try, test), Bashkir һынау (hınaw, to test), Kazakh сынау (synau, to test, verify), Kumyk сынамакъ (sınamaq, to test), Kyrgyz сыноо (sınoo, to test), Southern Altai сынаар (sïnaar, to test), Turkmen synamak (to test, experience), Uzbek sinamoq (to test).
