- From Pali sāsana (“teaching, order”), from Sanskrit शासन (śāsana, “order, edict, command; a shastra, scripture; government, ruling”).
- From Javanese ꦱꦱꦤ (sasana, “location, place”), from Old Javanese sana, āsana (“sitting; seat; dwelling; posture”), from Sanskrit आसन (āsana, “seat, chair”). Doublet of asana.
