Etymology

From English section, from Old French section, from Latin sectio (“cutting, cutting off, excision, amputation of diseased parts of the body, etc.”), from sectus, past participle of secare (“to cut”). Cognate to Tok Pisin seksen, Tagalog seksyon, and Indonesian seksi.
