Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *sel (“to sneak, creep”). Cognate to Middle Irish seilche (“turtle, tortoise, snail”), English slug, Lithuanian selù, selėti (“slink, sneak into”). Perhaps related to the Illyrian tribe of the Seleiitani.[1]
