[edit]From Proto-Albanian *skūmba. Cognate to Gothic *𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (*skiuban, “cast, shove”) and 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (afskiuban, “cast away, shove off”) (cf. English shove, German schieben), Lithuanian skumbù and skùbti (“to hurry up”), Proto-Slavic *skuti (cf. Bulgarian ску́бя (skúbja, “to pluck, tear”), Macedonian скубе (skube)),[1] hence also Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, “to agitate”) and Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, “to shake, be agitated”). From the indo-european root *(s)kewbʰ-.
