Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Semitic *ṣ́yḳ- (to be narrow). Cognate with Arabic ضَاقَ (ḍāqa, to be narrow) and Biblical Hebrew צוּק (ṣuq, to constrain, bring into straits, press upon).
