Etymology[edit]
Past participle of sielzi, corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *exeltus < *exelctus < *exēlēctus, from Latin ex (“out of, from”) + ēlēctus (“picked, chosen, elected”). Compare Italian scelto, Venetian sièlto; cf. also French élit.
