Etymology[edit]

Past participle of sielzi, corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *exeltus < *exelctus < *exēlēctus, from Latin ex (out of, from) + ēlēctus (picked, chosen, elected). Compare Italian scelto, Venetian sièlto; cf. also French élit.
