Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *skī́ˀstas, from Proto-Indo-European *skid- + *-tos. Cognate with Latvian šķîsts (thin, pure), Old Prussian skijstan (pure) (sg. acc.), Proto-Slavic *čistъ (clean, pure).
